In new gender neutral uniform policies being rolled out in schools across the UK, boys will now be allowed to wear skirts and girls to wear trousers in school.

Over 80 state institutions, including 40 primary schools, have removed gender specific references to uniform in their schools’ policies.

This all comes as part of a plan funded by the government to encourage schools to be more open to gender neutrality and to those who may be questioning their gender identity.

This all comes after a popular private school, Brighton College, amended uniform rules to support transgender pupils.

Brighton College is a regular on the top ten list of schools in England for best academic results.

Principal Richard Cairns said there would still be two set uniforms but students could now chose which one they wanted to wear.

Speaking to The Independent, Mr Cairns said:

“This change follows requests from a small number of families. It ties in with my strong personal belief that youngsters should be respected for who they are.

“If some boys and girls are happier identifying with a different gender from that in which they were born, then my job is to make sure that we accommodate that.

“My only interest as headmaster is their welfare and happiness.”
