Just heartbreaking.

The first day of school is always an emotional time, but for one mum it’s more tear-jerking than most.

After Jessica Scherlen’s husband Justin was killed in the line of duty as a police officer in Texas, his work colleagues came together to escort his four kids on their first day back to school – including little Jackson, who was going to school for the first time ever.

Justin was fatally injured when he was wounded last September in a traffic accident while at work with the Amarillo Police Department. So about two dozen of his colleagues decided to be there for his family just one year later.

“Gotta be there,” said Officer Daniel Smith. “He was family. I can’t imagine how Jackson must have felt. It was hard to see him have to do that without his daddy.”

Emotional footage shows the police officers form a line in Jackson’s school, as he walked through them and received warm, loving hugs.

“I’d give it all back just to have Justin here with his son,” Officer Smith added. “At least we can be here for him and let Jackson know that he always has someone to call on.”

We can’t help but cry at this poignant, heartbreaking footage. Such a wonderful gesture from these compassionate and caring officers.
