As parents, we are all too familiar with stories about cyber-bullying and online dangers. The Internet and all new communication technology have the potential to be abused. The benefits of the internet far outweigh the negatives; however there are steps you can take to ensure that your child’s online experience is as safe as possible:
  • Encourage your child to tell you if they stumble upon any sites that aren’t suitable or could pose a threat.
  • If you catch them on a site that you think isn’t suitable, you shouldn’t automatically assume that they chose to visit this page
  • If you aren’t familiar with the technology, why not try an IT or internet evening course or get help from a knowledgeable friend?
  • Look in the ‘help’ menu of your browser for ‘security settings' which may enable you to restrict what sites and downloads your child has access to.
