With the long winter nights and cold days, keeping kids entertained can be a bit of a nightmare, with many mums struggling to think of what they can do to keep them happy and out of mischief.

Considering it’s December, and the countdown to the big day has officially begun, here are our top five Christmas movies for big kids:

The Polar Express

This beautiful animated film, based on Chris Van Allsburg’s novel, is ideal for children who are wavering on the verge of not believing. When one little boy starts to doubt Santa, the Polar Express pulls up outside his home and takes him, along with a several other kids, on a journey to the North Pole. Along the way they all discover a thing or two about themselves and start to believe in Santa again.

Home Alone

It might be an old one, but it is still a really good one. It’s definitely a classic movie that even today makes for a really good watch; it’s got it all: the baddies, the festivities, a story with a moral, family and most importantly the humour. There is a Home Alone 2, but the first one is definitely the best.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Based on a Dr. Seuss book, this movie is a great Saturday afternoon flick. As the Grinch, played by Jim Carrey, tries to put an end to Christmas, one little girl called Cindy Lou Who takes it upon herself to not only stop him but get him to fall back in love with the season. A really wonderful film that teaches the true meaning of Christmas.

The Muppets Christmas Carol

This great Dickens classic is brought to life with the help of Kermit the Frog, who plays Bob Cratchit, plus Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the rest of the Muppets. It follows the original story but with plenty of Muppet mischief to keep kids enthralled and entertained.

The Santa Clause

When Santa falls off the roof, someone needs to step up and take on the very important role so that children will still receive presents on Christmas morning. This man is Scott Calvin, played by Tim Allen. Not only does he reluctantly start to slowly become the man in red, but he grows closer to his son in the meantime. A really lovely feel good movie.
