The parents of a 13-year-old girl called the police after finding out that their daughter had been sending nude pictures of herself to other teens on her mobile phone and computer.

The parents of the girl, who has not been named to protect her identity, were horrified when they discovered sexually explicit content on their daughter’s electronic devices.

The teen had been sending boys a series of naked images on her mobile phone and tablet computer and had received similar pictures back in response.

The mum, from Virginia in the US said, “What scares me is... this much bigger than we realise. How many others are doing this and you don't realise it?”

The parents became aware of their daughter's activity when they heard other voices in her bedroom at around 4am.

They punished her by taking away her electronic devices.

But when they had a quick look through the devices they were unprepared for what they found.

“Looking through the phone and the tablet we did find, sexual pictures, conversations, that were very inappropriate for her age,” said the girl's mum.

Worryingly, one text conversation involved older boys.

‘We believe them to be 17-18ish... Definitely older than her, and they did request they have sex," said the mum. “Everybody wanted to be her friend, because according to these people, she was cool now,” she added.

The sheriff's office of the south-eastern Virginia county is still investigating, but an Attorney said the daughter could be sent to a juvenile counselling program that would involve her parents.

Depending on their ages, the older teens, however, could potentially face felony charges, the prosecutor said.

The girl’s concerned parents said that they called in the sheriff's office to protect her.

“We did this now to protect her. This could get worse, she could be taken,” said her mum.

Now, the girl's mum is urging other parents to do more to protect their kids.

She said parents should start by having all electronics fitted with parental controls to keep children away from dangerous apps.
