We have reported on a number of stories regarding disturbing discoveries made in food in recent times, but this has to be one of the most shocking we have ever heard.

The parents of school children in Tennessee, US have been left angry and concerned after finding out that their kids were reportedly served six-year-old meat at their schools.

The shocking incident first came to light when a parent contacted District Commissioner Michael Herrell, voicing their concern over pork served up at a school in Hawkins County.

Mr Herrell told local media that he believes the meat may have been served up in a number of the 18 schools located around the county. With the number of students possibly affected estimated at 7,000, this is particularly worrying for locals.

Thankfully, so far, there have been no reports of any child being taken ill after consuming the meat.

Commenting publicly on the incident, Mr Herrell said: “These high schoolers know when to not eat something, but elementary schoolers – do they know if meat is bad or not?”

“I’m disappointed the school system let this happen. To me, if we’ve got meat that old, I don’t understand why,” he added.

Elsewhere, Hawkins County Director of Schools Steve Starnes said that new procedures would be introduced in a bid to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

“We’re going to start incorporating not only the package date but also the delivery date on our inventory items, to make sure we know exactly when those items came in,” he said.

Let’s hope that no children suffer a reaction over this horrific blunder.
