From serious abuse to questionable rules, a number of alarming stories regarding schools have emerged of late.

This one, however, has to be one of the most unusual we have heard in a while, and it has reportedly left many parents ‘fuming’.

With excitement building over the rare solar eclipse tomorrow, pupils in one Devon school have been left bitterly disappointed after being banned from watching the phenomenon outside.

School management at Oldway primary school in Paignton, Devon have banned the children from going outside to watch the eclipse, as they are worried that it may be ‘too risky’ to their safety.

Head teacher Jane Smythe made her decision based on the fact that she “could not guarantee” that her 700 pupils would not look at the sun.

While the students are naturally devastated over the move, their parents, it seems, are just plain angry, with claims that the ban is “bizarre, a shame and a missed opportunity”.

A spokesman for the local council has responded to the issue by saying that while no instruction had been passed to the school regarding the event, they would be advising them to help the children to avoid looking directly at the sky.

We expect that this will be a fairly divisive issue. What are your thoughts?
