Any parent will respect the fact that a school’s management needs to stick to the rules and regulations relating to their pupils, but do they have to do so as rigidly in a potential life-or-death situation?

This is the question that parents at a Texas school are posing, after two students were suspended this week for sharing a prescription inhaler.

It all began when 13-year-old Alexis Kyle began suffering from an asthma attack during gym class. Seeing her friend struggling for breath, 12-year-old Indiyah Rush came to her aid and gave her her own prescription inhaler.

Teachers supervising the class witnessed the scene and pulled the students up over it. After being brought before the principal, both Alexis and Indiyah were suspended.

With their daughters now facing into 30 days at an alternative school, the girls’ parents have shared their outrage over the decision to punish them for taking initiative and potentially saving a life.

Alexis’ stepfather told local media: “The little girl saved her life. And the reason we say that is because we have been to situations where she has been to ICU, so we know how bad her asthma is.”

The girls have now made their own cases to administrators, and they are waiting to find out if they will be punished further.
