A playground prank in the UK is leaving students with injuries, with some having to be treated for broken bones.

'Sweep them off their feet' is a new craze being practised by schoolchildren and teens in the UK. The prank involves children removing their school tie, tying it around the ankle of their target and pulling it, leaving the unfortunate student flat on their face.

The dangerous prank, also known as 'sweep 'em down' has left some students with broken bones. Rebecca Smith's 13-year-old daughter Ellanneh fell foul to the prank.

The Croydon told the Independent UK: "Ellanneh went to school and I received a phone call around lunchtime saying Ellanneh had hurt herself.

.“I didn't go down there in the first place because they didn't say she had broken her arm. My son Danny, who was with me at the time, said he would go down there."

When Danny arrived at Oasis Academy Coulsdon, he rang Smith straight away with the news that Ellanneh's arm was broken. The year eight pupil was rushed to the hospital and required surgery on her arm.

One dad, of Harrow, north west London, said he had heard of pupils “pranking each other” with the game, but didn’t realise how serious it was at first.

He told the Sun: “I’d heard my son laughing about his friend being ‘swept’, but I had no idea what he was talking about.

“Then his friend came in with a big graze on his face and told me what happened – they think it’s fun, but it’s just daft and dangerous.”

In a statement to the Croydon Advertiser, they said: “Oasis Academy Coulsdon has no higher priority than the safety and personal well-being of all our young people.

“If ever there is an incident in which any of our students’ well- being might be at risk we always act immediately to make the situation safe. An incident took place at the academy during lunch time in which one of our students was injured due to the unsafe behaviour of another."

“The principal has appropriately sanctioned the student responsible for their conduct, who has also apologised unreservedly. We have made clear to our student body that unsafe behaviour will not be tolerated.”
