The arrival of a baby should be nothing but joyous, which is why our hearts are going out to a family in Poland this week.

According to reports, doctors recently managed to safely deliver the child of a pregnant woman who was declared brain-dead at the end of last year.

The 41-year-old woman was not far into her pregnancy when she was rushed to hospital and pronounced brain-dead shortly after.

The woman’s family were desperate to save her child, and she was kept alive on life support for 55 days until the baby boy could be brought safely into the world.

According to ABC News, a hospital official said: “It was a long 55-day battle. We doctors wanted the little man to grow as big as possible but there came a day when there was a real danger to his life, so we opted for delivery via Caesarean section.”

The tot was born in January, weighing in at just one kilogram, and was kept in intensive care for the following three months. He now weighs a reported three kilos.

The mother’s life support was switched off just hours after her child was delivered.

Our thoughts are with this family, and we hope the little boy will continue to thrive.
