When you’re pregnant, your first thought at all times is the safety of your unborn child, but what happens when the lives of both you and your little one come under threat?
This was the scenario that British mum Tracey Moberly found herself in many years ago when, 12 weeks into her pregnancy with her second child, doctors found a cancerous lump in her womb.
She recalled the moment she received her diagnosis to Wales Online, saying: “I was told I had the worst type of cancer, and the stage it had reached was very high. The doctor telling me had apologised, saying he’d never had to break news like this and in such a way.”
While her consultant was eager to operate as soon as possible to remove the lump, Tracey appealed for the procedure to be put off until such time as the baby was fully formed. Even then, she was afraid that neither she nor her son would make it through alive.
Medics listened to Tracey’s pleas to put the surgery off and, against all odds, both she and her son survived. Little Izaac was born via Caesarean section, a healthy and happy baby.
Izaac is now all grown-up and attending university, but Tracey felt compelled to share her story to mark World Cancer Day tomorrow. What a remarkable woman - her story can inspire and educate us all.
