You have the books, the stationery and the uniform sorted – now you need to focus on taming your little princess’ tresses for back-to-school! Here are some simple but beautiful ideas.

1. The Woven Pony

Little girls will love this elegant criss-cross style.

  • Sweep the top layer of hair together and fasten with an elastic, leaving the bottom layer free. You should have a half-up style to work with.
  • Divide the bottom layer in two, pushing over each shoulder to separate out.
  • Taking the left bunch of hair, divide it into two. Bring the top piece all the way across the elasticated hair and tuck it into a hole in the elasticated section of hair.
  • Take the right bunch of hair, divide in two and, as with the last step, tuck the top layer into the elasticated section of hair. going in the opposite direction.
  • Repeat the step with the remaining pieces of hair, but this time thread the hair through a different hole in the elasticated section.
  • Fasten with an elastic, right below your woven creation.

2. The Pony’ Knot

A neat little take on the traditional ponytail.

  • Recreate the same half-up look as with the first style, above.
  • Divide the bottom layer of free hair in two, and dampen it slightly to make it easier to style.
  • Take the two pieces of hair from either side and carefully tie them in a knot, just as you would with laces.
  • Cross the right piece of hair over the ponytail to the left side, then tuck both ends through the original elastic underneath.

3. The French Twist

A creative and simple twist on the classic French braid.

  • Separate the hair out as though you were doing a French braid from the front of the head, except you’re using two sections of hair rather than three.
  • Twist the two pieces of hair around each other, adding a little more hair to each side every time you cross the sections.
  • Once you have reached the back of the head, twist the hair normally and sweep it up with the rest of the loose hair, into a ponytail, with an elastic.

4. The Minnie Bow

Inspired by Disney favourite Minnie Mouse, this is simpler than it might first look.

  • Gather your hair and sweep it into a high ponytail.
  • Take a small section of hair and wrap it around the elastic, securing with a hairpin.
  • Take a section of hair from the ponytail and wind a clear elastic around it. When you get to the final wrap, don’t pull the hair all the way through – leave it to create a loop.
  • Divide your loop into two parts, then secure them to the head with hair pins, leaving one side sticking out. Do the very same to the other side of the loop, on the other side of the head.
  • To create the middle section of the bow, take a small section of hair from just underneath the elastic, and pull it over the middle, securing with a hair pin.

5. The Jasmine Twist

What little girl doesn't love Princess Jasmine? Here's a two-minute trick for recreating her iconic hairstyle.

  • Tie the hair into a low ponytail and fasten with an elastic.
  • Taking your thumb and forefinger, slip them up into the middle to the ponytail, just above the elastic, and pull the ponytail through the hole.
  • Gently pull the hair in place and spray with hairspray to hold in place.
