The weather likes to remind us that the summer is well and truly over – the cold chill and wet mornings are a sign that winter is not too far away. While it means a whole new seasonal wardrobe, one down side is with the cold spell comes dry, chapped, split lips which can be quite sore and unsightly.

To help mums stop it from happening try the following:

Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. When drinking, dab a little onto your lips to avoid them staying dry.

Exfoliate
Remove any dry skin by gently rubbing an old toothbrush onto your lips in circular movements.

Use an SPF
Make sure you use an SPF even during the winter. You can pick up a lip balm with an added sun protection but try to avoid this is your lips are already chapped, as it might just make it worse.

Moisturise regularly
Make sure you moisturise regularly, you can do this by using lip balms, chap sticks or petroleum jelly. Anything to avoid your lips becoming dry.

Avoid spicy food
If your lips are badly chapped, skip spicy food as it can just irritate it and make you feel worse.

Avoid breathing through your mouth
You might have already noticed that when you breathe through your mouth it becomes dry, this also affects your lips. Try to breathe through your nose instead.
