The future of private schools looks in doubt as experts say the rising prices is causing families to look for other options.

One of the organisers of the Independence Schools Show, the largest exhibition for British private schools in the world says the improved quality of schools in the state system has had a massive impact in the number of parents wanting to send their kids to private schools.

With private school fees reaching new heights, families are now willing to ignore tradition and chose different more affordable options.

“The cliché used to be the father would call from the maternity hospital and the first rite of passage in your child’s life would be a call to the housemaster to say get him register for the school in 13 years’ time," he said in a statement to the Sunday Telegraph.

“And it was decided. You go to the old prep school and you go to your father’s senior school but now you have to go through all the barrage of entry tests and so many of these schools are too academic for many children and parents want to be near the school even if it’s a boarding school.”

“Even fervent old school tie wearers will find the right, convenient and affordable school, even if that means breaking a long family line at their alma mater.”
