Our bodies send us signs when something is up, and vaginal dryness is one of those symptoms that suggests a number of issues that could be impacting on your life and your health. Here are five common causes, and what they mean.

1. Hormone changes

One of the most common causes of vaginal dryness is hormonal changes, particularly in oestrogen levels. This typically occurs during breastfeeding, menopause, perimenopause, or after childbirth. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can also lead to decreased oestrogen levels.

2. Medication

You will no doubt have heard that certain medications or courses of antibiotics can lead to the development of thrush. Given just how sensitive the vagina is, dryness is another complication of certain medications, particularly those containing antihistamines.

3. Stress/ Anxiety

The negative effects of stress affect every part of the body, and the vagina is no different. Stress and anxiety can negatively impact upon your sexual desire, causing dryness where your natural lubrication mechanisms don’t work properly.

4. Irritants

It is so important to be vigilant when it comes to how your body responds to your beauty and cleaning products. Some soaps and lotions can contain chemicals or ingredients that can cause an allergy, or can dry out the natural lubricant source in your vagina.

5. Insufficient sexual arousal

This is another common cause, with a woman’s low libido or her partner’s early ejaculation causing dryness during intercourse.
