We have been enjoying some pretty incredible weather over the past week or so, and it has been amazing to get out into the garden to catch a few rays. However, spare a thought for those students who are stuck in a classroom all day – particularly, the boys of Isca Academy, Exeter.
The boys were left frustrated earlier this week when, amid temperature of 30C and beyond, they were told they could not wear shorts to school; this was due to the current uniform policy. The girls, however, are permitted to wear skirts.
According to reports, when the male cohort drew up the issue with a member of staff in the school, the teacher joked that there was ‘nothing stopping them’ from wearing skirts, themselves!
The students decided to run with the idea and, borrowing from girlfriends and sisters, they turned up to school this week donning skirts!
An estimated 30 of the male students turned up to class in the school skirts, causing quite the stir among staff and students alike. And it didn’t take long for photos and videos of their statement to go viral online!
When asked how they found their new uniform, the boys reportedly responded with ‘quite refreshing’ and ‘nice breeze’!
It was only a matter of time before the school’s head teacher, Aimee Mitchell, had to issue a statement.
“We recognise that the last few days have been exceptionally hot, and we are doing our utmost to enable both students and staff to remain as comfortable as possible,” she explained.

“Shorts are not currently part of our uniform for boys, and I would not want to make any changes without consulting both students and their families.
“However, with hotter weather becoming more normal, I would be happy to consider a change for the future.”
Thankfully, none of the boys who partook in the ‘demonstration’ were said to have been punished for their actions. And rightly so, we say! Desperate times call for desperate measures, and we think it was an incredibly clever idea!
