Schools to provide free sanitary products for pupils in the United Kingdom

Schools in parts of the United Kingdom are hoping to provide schoolgirls with free sanitary products.

They hope this new service will help tackle period poverty, which is affecting far too many young women across the United Kingdom.

It is understood that City Councils in both Bristol and Nottingham will provide students with pads and tampons.

The schools were concerned over the high numbers of youths who were missing school due to their period.

It is believed schoolgirls have been missing school because they don’t have enough money to pay for sanitary products.

Labour councillor Nick Raine told The Sun: “It affects pupils' education. A total of 49 per cent of young women say they have missed at least one day of school because they didn't have adequate sanitary protection, and some have missed more."

"As a council, this in our power to address. And it was about time, in terms of equality, to discuss these matters in public."

Period poverty has a damaging effect on young women, especially on their mental health. A recent study found that 39 percent of participants shared that they suffer from anxiety or depression because of their situation.

The study found that 39 percent of women struggled to socialise and said they found it hard to make friends.

Women who couldn’t afford sanitary wear also struggled in education. The survey found that a concerning number of young women affected by period poverty failed to complete their exams, including their GCSEs.

This major step by schools in Bristol and Nottingham is bound to make a massive impact on the lives of so many young women.
