The summer can be a long few weeks for both Mum and kids as we all struggle to find ways to keep them entertained. While we encourage our children to head outdoors as much as possible, this can be a little impossible when it’s raining outside.

However, rather than stick on a DVD or even the telly, why not keep their reading up by creating a plan that is specifically tailored for bad days.

1. Set reading time

When it’s raining outside it’s easy to lose motivation to get up and do anything so be organised before it does rain. If rain is forecast, spend the evening before writing up a reading plan that includes set times and locations to read. Fit it around other indoor play activities to keep them stimulated and to avoid a reading slump.

2. Create a comfy reading spot

There is nothing quite like snuggling up with a good book in a comfy part of the room so spend an hour or two creating the ideal space. Fill it with cushions, pillows, blankets, soft lighting and even a table for snacks and your little one will be hard pushed to leave!

3. Choose interactive stories

Go for books that are interactive and involve more than one person to keep them stimulated. Alternatively, why not choose a story and act it out with the help of siblings and friends – a great way to get reluctant kids into reading.

4. Head to the library

If you haven’t managed to do up a plan or you really need to get out for some air or even a change of scenery, why not head to the library. Here your kids will be given free range of a whole host of different books and with most libraries decked out with comfy cushions and seats, it’s a great way to while away an afternoon immersed in books.

5. Treat them to a new book

Keep their reading motivation up by treating them to a new book every time they finish one. If your budget doesn’t stretch to this type of expense let them choose a book in the library or even head to a charity shop were you will pick up one fairly cheaply.
