A British teacher has resigned after an incident in which they taped one of their pupil’s mouths shut to keep her quiet.

According to reports, the teacher covered the 10-year-old’s mouth “as a joke”, but the incident was later reported after the child told her parents that her lips had bled after the tape was removed.

The supply teacher was then suspended from the Cambridgeshire school, later going on to resign.

The local council issued a full statement regarding the incident, saying that a full investigation had been carried out, and they had spoken to the teacher involved.

The statement read: “Although there was no ill intent or unkindness intended, it is clear this incident should not have happened and the member of staff has resigned from their post.”

“We have spoken to the child’s parents and apologised as this fell below the standards we expect,” they added.

This is not the first report of such an incident, with a teacher at a school in Somerset resigning from her post this summer for taping a pupil’s mouth shut.
