School may be out for the summer, but before students waved goodbye to their classmates and uniforms, they embraced one very sweet school tradition.

At the end of the school year, many pupils give their teacher a small gift to say thanks for everything they’ve done.

Teachers receive an array of gifts from students, some good, and some not so good. One group of teachers opened up to Mumsnet about the greatest gifts they have ever received.

Kids usually bring in flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine (purchased by their parents, obviously) for their teacher on the last day of school. However, the group involved in the survey admitted that they weren’t their favourite gifts.

A mere 2 percent said flowers were the best gift, followed by 4 percent for sweet treats.

Personalised gifts were amongst the most popular, with 9 percent of teachers gushing over personalised mugs, notebooks and other gifts.

Others appreciated gift vouchers, candles and cakes, however, the most-cherished gifts were the ones that didn’t cost a penny.

15 percent of teachers said a heartfelt personal note or card from their students’ parents meant the most to them.

A further 33 percent said the best present they have ever received was a heartfelt personal card from one of their students.

Towards the end of the school year, we often spot mugs or frames with ‘best teacher’ printed on them, however, 25 percent of teachers said they are one of their least favourite gifts.

However, the majority of participants were grateful for every gift they received with 47 percent saying they valued every present.
