A 19-year-old woman has been awarded damages of $1.25 million, after being forced to urinate in a bucket when a teacher denied her access to the toilet.

The young woman was 14 and a student at San Diego’s Patrick Henry High School at the time of the incident.

According to her testimony, she was attending a 25-minute class when she asked to use the toilet. The teacher, allegedly believing this to be against the rules, prohibited the student from leaving to use the bathroom.

Instead, the student was directed to a supply room at the back of the classroom, where the teacher kept a bucket 'for emergencies'.

As distressing as the incident must have been for the teen, matters grew worse when it became public knowledge.

The young woman's lawyer told the court that she was subsequently mocked and bullied to the point where she attempted suicide.

While the teacher has insisted that she never intended to humiliate or distress the teen, a case was brought against her and the San Diego Unified School District.

Now in therapy due to post-traumatic stress relating to the incident, the 19-year-old won her case this week.

Commenting on the award of the massive sum, her lawyer said:  “Something like this never should have happened to a 14-year-old girl just entering high school.”

“She took the stand and told a really embarrassing story, she told the jury how this has affected her life and how she is still working through issues.”
