Now that the winter chill is starting to set in, our fears of picking up those dreaded coughs, colds and flus have heightened. While we can’t wrap ourselves in Tefal-coating against winter illness, there are some precautions we can take to give us a fighting chance.

1. Consider a multi-vitamin

This is the one time of the year that we tend to need an extra boost, and a multi-vitamin could be your best bet. With so many options, it’s best to consult with your pharmacist on choosing the right multi-vitamin for you. An Echinacea supplement could also be an option for warding off those coughs and colds.

2. Drink green tea

Green tea is not just good for your digestive system, it also contains a catechin (a form of antioxidant) that scientists believe can actually damage influenza particles.

3. Eat ginger

While it may not be the most palatable ‘treat’ to consume, just like garlic, ginger can stop harmful bacteria in their tracks. Swallow a piece raw for maximum impact – your immune system will thank you for it.

4. Get enough sleep

Lack of sleep can get in the way of your basic functioning and run you down, leaving you more susceptible to picking up colds, flus and infections. Make sure your head is hitting the pillow at a reasonable hour – there is no amount of housework or office work that can justify you running your health down.

5. Heap on the honey

Manuka honey, to be precise. Available from your local pharmacy, Manuka honey has previously been scientifically linked with treating strep-throat and even pneumonia.
