Surgical correction of the ptosis can be undertaken at any age depending on its severity. Early intervention may be necessary if there are significant signs of amblyopia. If surgery is not deemed urgent then it is often delayed until three or four years of age. Patching the good eye can also be a part of treatment due to the risk of amblyopia. Even if surgery is performed your ophthalmologist may still recommend patching.

Surgery

Surgery will allow the eyelid lifting muscles to be tightened. If the levator muscle is very weak the lid can be attached or suspended from under the eyebrow. This will allow the forehead muscles to do the lifting. Even after surgery focusing problems can develop so it is essential that any child who has ptosis be continually treated by an ophthalmologist. It is not uncommon for there to be more than one surgery required.
