The principal of a primary school has been suspended when questionable treatment suffered by a child living with autism came to light.

The principal of a school in Canberra, which has not been named, has come under fire after a student was allegedly placed in a cage-like structure in his classroom.

Commenting on the the school's approach to children with special needs, Education Minister, Joy Burch, said: "Words can’t put into place the absolute disappointment and horror I have that, in our schools, that anyone would consider a structure of this nature in any way, shape or form acceptable."

The 10-year-old child was apparently made use the cage-like structure between March 10th and 27th this year in a move which has been forcefully condemned by  Ms. Burch,

Refusing to play down the controversy, the Minister for Education told the media: "Whether it was in the school for 17 days, 17 minutes of 17 seconds, it had no place there."

The structure has been described by the Australian Capital Territory Education Directorate as a 'withdrawal space', saying: "The space was a fenced-in structure inside a classroom."

The family of the child in question have contacted the Human Rights Commission following the shocking revelation.
