Even though way back in June it seemed like the summer would last forever, September always manages to roll back around again. Here are the typical back to school things we can't help but do around this time of year:

Go on a health kick
There's nothing like a fresh start to make you feel like it's time for a health kick. You promise to bring the family along for the ride aswell - no more take-aways or biscuits. It's time for a new and improved way of living. Which means you will be....

Reading about quick and healthy lunch options for the kids
They all seem like such great ideas. Avacado salad, why not? Cous cous and lentils? No problem. Your mind runs away with all these fantastic ideas that you've read about, but it's not long till reality hits and you realise sandwiches are ten times easier, and they probably won't eat anything else anyway. So you move on to your next back to school activity, which is:

Shopping
This may not be the kind of shopping you enjoy, but it's a necessary part of going back to school. Shoes, uniforms, school bags and stationary all have to be bought. On second thoughts - isn't that school bag from last year good enough?

The search for last years' school bag
You know it's there somewhere, you just have to find it. Under the stairs perhaps? At the back of the wardrobe? Aha! There it is, hidden in the darkest corner of their bedroom. You stick your hand in to see if they left anything in it and to your horror, you find a three month old ham sandwich and a mushed up banana. Great. It'll need to be washed, but you can do it in the morning, after all, it's time to:

Set the alarm clock earlier
You attempt to get used to getting up that little bit earlier before September hits. And it works, to a certain degree. At least it gives you more time to:

Start looking for after school activities
Both for you and the kids. After all, you're going to have to find some way to fill those long autumn evenings. Who knows, you could become a master potter if you put your mind to it. Actually, with all these activities perhaps you should:

Make a timetable
Just so you don't forget anything. Stick it up on the fridge too, so everyone understands the plan. Dinner will be at 4pm daily, homework done by six, showers by seven. You will run a military style house this year. No more excuses. Well, perhaps it won't be that strict, this is all starting to sound a bit exhausting. It's right about now you start to...

Cherish the quiet mornings
You know what? This 'back to school' thing isn't as exciting as you thought. It's time for a cup of tea before the kids wake up, at least you don't have to spend the morning looking for their shoes, or their school tie. Why can't the summer last forever?
