A school in the UK has had to apologise after they told pupils they’d be given bread and butter if they forgot their dinner money.

Alban Church of England Academy in Great Barford made the drastic policy after pupils turned up to school without a packed lunch or change more than 100 times in a month.

In a letter sent out to parents, head teacher Sue Lourensz wrote that the meals cost £2.10 a day and that without money from the kids, the school had to fund each meal before recouping their losses from the parents.

To save money, staff  decided that, after first trying to call the parents, they would only provide the child with a drink and bread and butter.

Unsurprisingly, however, parents were not impressed with the new rule and the school had to do a huge U-turn.

“The letter itself was intended to explain the situation and trial a policy that has been successfully adopted by other schools. Please accept our sincere apologies,” wrote Ms Lourensz in a second letter.

“I apologise if this has caused any offence, this was not our intention."
