Childcare centres in Wales have received a major boost this week with the announcement that the government is to invest more funding in the sector.

Centres which provide out-of-school childcare for families in the country will reportedly benefit from a £400,000 grant due to be issued by the Welsh Government.

Among the centres that have been marked to benefit from the new funding are play workshops in Caerphilly and Conwy, kids’ clubs in Cardiff, and a new nursery in Wrexham.

The funding will also help to pay for staff training at centres in Pembrokeshire which provide care for children with autism.

Speaking after the announcement, Communities Minister Lesley Griffiths said that the funding is part of a broader plan being rolled out to address the gaps in childcare in Wales.

Minister Griffiths said that the focus of the plan is to improve children’s well-being and reduce inequalities in the sector.

The news comes after the release of a recent report by the Family and Childcare Trust, claiming that just five percent of Wales’ 22 councils had sufficient out-of-school activities for young kids and teenagers.
