Your first pregnancy is a whirlwind of emotions... and questions. And one of the most prominent questions is whether you want to find out if your baby is a boy or a girl.

However, for this new mum, that memory is one she wants to forget.

A mum-to-be wrote in anonymously to an advice page Dear Prudence, because she was desperate for help.

The woman begins by saying she and her husband wanted to keep the gender of the baby a surprise until the birth, but her mother-in-law had a different idea.

"My mother-in-law was livid with our decision, even though I tried to placate her by using the obstetrician she suggested and allowing her to attend some of my prenatal appointments.

"She continued to bring up gender at every opportunity."

Her mother-in-law wanted to know the gender so badly, she even went behind the mother's back to find out the information.

The new mum wrote that after they all attended a pre-natal screening, her MIL seemed very satisfied with herself.

"A few days later I had messages from family members congratulating me on the baby girl I was having.

"My mother-in-law wheeled the information out of the ultrasound technician, who is a friend of hers, then announced it."

And to add to that, she wasn't even one bit apologetic about it.

"My mother-in-law is smug about her tactics and told me nastily that if I 'still had a mother', I wouldn't be so selfish (I was orphaned at age 14)."

However, the woman didn't take that lying down and took control of her family back.

She changed her doctor and threatened the old clinic with legal action for violating her privacy.

She has also banned the grandmother from the hospital during the birth and has made it clear she does not want a her to visit the hospital after the birth either.

She signed off the letter as "Sad Mommy" which raised concerns that she was being too harsh on her mother-in-law, however, many commenters have said her actions were totally justified.
