It’s a fear that many prospective parents face into, where they can't bond with their newborn child, and despite appearances that was exactly the case for this world-famous father-of-one.

In possibly his most candid interview yet, Simon Cowell has admitted to fears after failing to connect with son Eric in the early days and weeks after his birth.

In an interview with Susanna Reid for Good Morning Britain, the 56-year-old recalled how confusing the transition into fatherhood was for him.

“I’m great with puppies because a puppy will respond, but babies at a certain age don’t do anything, so when he was about five or six months old I was like, I just don’t know what to do,” said the X Factor mogul.

Recounting an experience that no doubt countless other mums and dads can relate to, Simon added: “He wasn’t reacting to me and I thought maybe he hates me. And they said, ‘No, take your time’. And then one day they are talking, listening and responding and also they sort of become a bit like you. Which I don’t know is a good thing or a bad thing! He’s a funny little thing.”

Simon welcomed Eric with his partner, Lauren Silverman, in February 2014.
