Carbonara for dinner we think!

Certain foods are much maligned as being ‘fattening’ or bad for us, and often we just accept that. But lovers of the delicious Italian staple pasta (i.e. everyone) will be delighted by the results of a new study that shows that pasta actually helps you lose weight.

Yep, guilt about chowing down on glorious forkfuls of spaghetti and pasta bakes is soon to be no more, as a survey of over 23,000 people has linked eating pasta to lower boy mass and hip-to-waist ratio.

Carried out by the IRCCS Neuromed Institute in Italy and published in the journal Nutrition and Diabetes, the study’s results come as a surprise. Carbohydrate-rich pasta has long been demonised for causing weight gain and bloating.

“In light of this research, we can say that this is not a correct attitude,” says Licia Lacoviello, head of molecular and nutritional epidemiology at the Neuromed Institute.

“We’re talking about a fundamental component of Italian Mediterranean tradition, and there is no reason to do without it.

“The message emerging from this study, is that Mediterranean diet, consumed in moderation and respecting the variety of all its elements, is good to your health.”
