Nine-year-old Ciaran Donnelly from Inverclyde in Scotland suffered a terrible injury to his eye after a freak accident.

Ciaran swerved to avoid hitting his little sister and tumbled off his bike. Unfortunately, as he fell, the handlebar of his bike went into his left eye.

The youngster suffered a loss of vision and must wear a patch while going through surgery to reattach the muscles in his eye.

Mum Leona told The Metro: “He fell off his bike and the handle bar went into his eye. It was horrible.

“We first thought that he had a black eye but it’s turned out to be far worse. It’s very unlikely that he will get his vision back.

Ciaran’s dad Kevin explained: “It was an innocuous accident but it’s created all sorts of problems, including fractured bones in his eye socket.

“It swelled up so much and because of the pressure and optic nerve was starved of oxygen and muscle detached from the eye.

“Now he’s lost sight in his left eye. He can’t see anything, it’s pitch black”.

Brave young Ciaran has coped admirably despite the extent of his injury.

He said: “The accident hasn’t stopped me much and I wasn’t worried when it happened. It was my sister’s birthday and I got more cards than her”.

The youngster is a keen footballer who plays for Morton 2008s side and has just returned to training.

Recently, he was invited to be a VIP guest at a training session where he met the first team, including his favourite player Jai Quitongo.

Ciaran said: "It was good watching the players and to get their autographs.

Ciaran was taken to the local hospital in Inverclyde, before being rushed to Royal Alexandra in Paisley, then transferred to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Glasgow.

Doctors at the Queen Elizabeth hospital carried out emergency surgery on Ciaran’s eye to attempt to relieve the swelling and repair the damage.

He’s since had another operation to reattach the muscles to his eye but his parents say it’s unlikely he will regain sight in his eye.

However, Kevin said he was deeply grateful to the staff at Queen Elizabeth for helping his son.

We wish Ciaran all the best for the future – what a horrible ordeal he has endured.
