When it comes to talking to our youngsters, there are a number of things mums say that actually have a whole other meaning behind them.

Here are ten things you are likely to say to your kids, and what you really mean - just don't let your children read this:

'Maybe'
What you really mean: No, it will never happen, but I am way too tired to argue with you right now.

'Because I am in charge'
What you really mean: I am in charge but I really can’t think up an excuse as to why you can’t go out to play.

'Maybe when you’re older'
What you really mean: Hopefully by the time you are older you will have forgotten all about this conversation. Be warned. Kids never forget.

'That looks amazing. Well done.'
What you really mean: I don’t actually know what it is. But I’m sure it’s amazing.

'Go ask your dad'
What you really mean: I don’t want to be the bad guy in this.

'You better be in bed by the time I count to five.'
What you really mean: I’ll give you to five and maybe a few seconds after.

'Santa’s watching'
What you really mean: Santa is watching, but what you do right now won’t have any bearing on your present.

'If you don’t quit fighting, I will stop this car and you can walk home'
What you really mean: Don’t tempt me. If it wouldn’t be considered child neglect I would so do it.

'You’ll be fine. It’s just a little cut.'
What you really mean: You literally just gave me a mini heart attack and now I am really trying to hide the fact that I was terrified two minutes ago. Plus you are fine.

'I love you up to the moon and back.'
What you really mean: I love you up to the moon and back.
