According to extensive global media reports, over 500 people have been injured and hundreds hospitalised in intensive care units following a devastating explosion in a water park in Taiwan.

Emergency rescue workers have been tending to the victims of the Formosa  Water Park tragedy in Taipei City since it unfolded yesterday.

According to reports, a flammable powder is believed to have exploded in midair over the Formosa Fun Coast Stage yesterday evening.

Shocking footage which has emerged  of the disaster shows an enormous ball of flames engulfing the stage before horrified revellers attempt to run for their lives.

Commenting on the tragedy, Formosa Fun Coast released a statement, saying: "We are very regretful for this accident that caused injuries to many victims. The most urgent matter currently for us is to handle and assist with victims on the scene and work comprehensively with the New Taipei Fire Department."

Speaking out following the devastating incident,  New Taipei's mayor, Eric Chu, called the tragedy: "The worst incident of mass injury ever in New Taipei."

Eight of the hundreds of victims injured during yesterday's tragedy are understood to be in a critical condition this morning.

This is unfortunately not the only tragedy to unfold at a popular family resort in recent months after numerous individuals were injured while on the Smiler ride at at Alton Towers this summer..

Our thoughts go out to the hundreds of families affected by these heartbreaking turn of events.
