We have heard of situations where the police have been present for births, but almost always in a helpful capacity – certainly not in the context of this latest story.

A couple have gone public with the story of how police pulled them over for speeding while on the way to hospital to have their baby, and arrested the dad-to-be.

James Reiner was speeding to the local hospital with wife Dana when her water broke in the car on the way. Given the tense situation they were in, James did not pull over when police began following them and signalled for them to pull over.

James decided to call the local police and inform them of the situation, and he was advised to pull over and explain what was happening to the officers. What happened when he did, however, is truly shocking.

In dashcam footage captured from the night, the police are seen ordering James out of the car and onto the ground at gunpoint. Despite James explaining the situation, and Dana getting out of the car to show the officers that her waters had broken and this was an emergency, the officers continued on regardless.

The footage shows a stressed and terrified Dana screaming at the officers, who call an ambulance and proceed to taunt James about being in jail on the night when his child is born.

The couple were delayed by an extra 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived, and while Dana welcomed a healthy baby shortly after, doctors said that the child could have died due to its umbilical cord being wrapped around its neck.

James, meanwhile, was arrested and jailed for ‘resisting law enforcement’.

While the incident occurred back in 2012, the Reiners have only gone public with their story now because police dashcam footage has only just been released.

The couple did try to press charges at the time, but they insist that they are now focused on clearing James’ criminal record.
