Why do teens abuse drugs and alcohol?

There are many reasons that teens abuse substances including the following:
  • A desire to be socially accepted by a group of friends or peers
  • It makes them feel temporarily good about themselves
  • It makes them feel more mature and grown up
Teens often feel the need to rebel, to push boundaries and try new experiences so they may take drugs or drink as a result. Teens that have family members with problems with substance or alcohol abuse are more likely to have a problem themselves. Also, teens who don't have th esupport of their parents or who suffer from low self esteem are also at risk.
