We all know just how expensive the summer is when you’ve got kids to keep happy and amused. And whether you are a SAHM or a working mum, it’s never easy trying to keep the cries of boredom at bay.

This summer, why not keep the kids entertained, without breaking the bank, with these ten DIY back garden activities.

1. Swing set

If you have a sturdy tree in the garden, why not make your very own swing. All you need is a plank of wood and strong thick rope.

2. Horseshoe throwing

A fun, traditional game and you don’t even need horseshoes to play it. Using a Frisbee and a stick stuck into the ground, simply have each player take it in turns to get the ring onto the stick.

3. Bottle ring toss

Fill up a number of 1litre plastic bottles with water and line them up together. Give each participant five bangles and see if they can get them onto the top of the bottles.

4. Water balloon Piñata

Fill up a number of balloons with water popping a small surprise into each one. Give each player a stick and have them hit the balloon until it bursts revealing the prize.

5. Bowling

Line up ten plastic bottles in a triangle shape and see how many each player can knock down with a football in one go.

6. Ice treasure hunt

Fill up a basin with various toys and water and put it into the freezer until frozen solid. Then let the kids chip away at it until they’ve found all the surprises.

7. Tug of war

Place two overturned baskets on the ground and let one child stand on each. Next give them a rope and have them pull and tug until one falls off.

8. Giant scrabble

Using empty cereal boxes, write a letter on each one until you have all the letters of the alphabet - do this twice so you have two As, two Bs, etc. Now spend the afternoon making up words!

9. Pick up sticks

Throw a fairly big pile of large straws into the middle of the garden. Each player has to try to pick up one without moving the others.

10. Water balloon dodge ball

This one is really great for hot, summer days. Break the players down into two teams and give each team five water balloons each. The team with the most dry people at the end wins.
