Play is not just a way of keeping the kids away from the TV, it is essential to help your child grow and learn. For kids with ADHD, playing and certain games are a great way to help them develop important skills, express themselves and bond with you.
The following are fun, suitable for all ages and will help your child in some ways no matter how small.
1. Fantasy games like doctors
Due to their inability to communicate their problem, children with ADHD may feel isolated and afraid, something that fantasy play can help with. Playing doctors and nurses, mums and dads or even superheroes can help your child explore their feelings and express themselves in a safe environment.
2. Jigsaw puzzles
Jigsaw puzzles are great for kids with ADHD as not only do they help children focus in on a task, it also helps to improve their concentration and attention span.
3. Simon Says
Simon Says is a great game to help your child learn how to take direction. The game involves participants doing exactly what the leader asks, but only if they say ‘Simon Says’. This encourages them to focus and concentrate as well as follow direction.
4. Red light, green light
Ask the participants to run around and when you call out 'red light' they have to stop and when you say 'green light' they have to go. Again, this will help them learn how to follow direction as well as develop listening skills.
5. Egg and spoon race
The egg and spoon race involves participants balancing an egg on their spoon as they try to make it across the finish line first without dropping it. A great way to get kids outside, it can also help them develop their motor skills as well as balance.
