Christmas is definitely the most expensive time of year, with gifts to buy and extra mouths to feed, but it doesn't have to be. There are plenty of things you can do to not only cut down but actually save you some money.

Take note of the following tips and you'll still have money in your account come January:

1. Use your store coupons

Look under the couch, in drawers, at the bottom of your handbag and anywhere else you may have stashed your coupons. Now is the time to use them up before the expire and they can help with the cost of your groceries.

2. Don’t overindulge

It can be hard not overindulging at this time of year, but your bank balance won’t appreciate it come January.  Leave the Brussels sprouts if you don’t like them and don’t go overboard buying party nibbles – these often end up going to waste.

3. Sell some stuff

If you have a particularly unique toy or fancy dress that you no longer need or wear, now is the time to sell it on eBay. At this time of year, people are searching online for secondhand items that can help save them money – the cash is worth more than leaving the dress hanging in your wardrobe.

4. Do your own hair

With so many parties to go to, it can be hard to resist the urge to get the hair done, but do a DIY job instead – it’ll save you a fortune.

5. Look for bargains

You don’t have to spend a certain amount of money on a gift for it to be a good one – it’s always the thought that counts. Look for bargains and sales and never rate your gift on its cost.
