The fertility treatment your doctor recommends will depend upon what’s causing your efforts to conceive to be unsuccessful.

If your partner’s impotence or premature ejaculation is causing the problem, there are medications to treat it. If he has a low sperm count, your doctor can recommend a surgery to correct it. If your partner has sustained a spinal cord injury, there are a couple methods of harvesting sperm.

If your body is having trouble ovulating, there are number of oral medications which can help. There are also injections, but these can provoke a multiple birth pregnancy. If there are blockages, your doctor can perform surgery to correct it. There is also assisted hatching and IVF (in vitro fertilization).

The downside of fertility treatments is that they are expensive and many insurance policies will not cover them (some insurers, such as VHI, will cover fertility investigations under some plans and some, but not all, hospitals will cover medical card holders for fertility investigations). However, the treatments are quite successful. Two-thirds of couples seeking fertility treatment successfully conceive.

As far as what you can do to up your odds, quit smoking. Get enough sleep each night. Exercise regularly. Don’t go to the extreme, however, because being too underweight compromises fertility. Also make sure you and your partner eat a diet that is rich in folic acid.
