Whether it’s how to roll with the punches, take things less seriously or simply to take life as it comes, many of us have learned a thing or two this year that we will take with us through to 2015.

We asked our mums to share what they learned over the previous twelve months, and here’s what they said:

1. “Not to take my kids for granted and remember they are a special gift from heaven, given especially to me.”

2. “Keep the channels open with teenagers - always talk to them and don't sweat the small stuff!”

3. “Check the lid is on before you shake it!!”

4. “Don't listen to everybody else and do what feels right for you.”

5. “[To] believe in myself as a mother.”

6. “That kids are messy, even if you are really tidy and organised they can cause disarray in seconds! Also, give them space to be who they are and enjoy them as it all goes by in a flash.”

7. “To appreciate and be grateful for what I have, not moan about what I haven't.”

8. “That all kids misbehave doesn't mean I'm doing something wrong or a bad mum. Wouldn't say I’ve learnt this I'm still. Learning.”

9. “You can manage on not a lot of sleep - just!”

10. “To spend less time on my phone and more time playing, painting and making mess.”

11. “That not all wax crayons are 'washable' especially when trying to scrub it off wallpaper!”

12. “Cherish every day and let my hair down a bit as there [are] things called a washing machine, Hoover and mop in my kitchen!”

13. “To hug my loved ones every time I see them & tell them what they mean to me. We have had some heavy losses on both sides of family this year, so our little family is more important than anything in the world.”

14. “I've learnt that you can't control everything and sometimes you just have to go with the flow.”

15. “That time flies. Your baby won't be your baby forever so cherish middle-of-the-night cuddles, snuggly mornings in bed, and those times you can't move off the sofa because they've fallen asleep on you. Don't try to move them onto the next stage too fast.”

16. “That childbirth isn't always easy because your first 2 were a walk in the park”

17. “Never give up on your dreams. Welcomed my two miracles in July after 5+ years trying. Looking forward to the fun times ahead.”

18. “Keeping positive really does pay off. Roll on 2015”

19. “Don’t take life so seriously and when a child makes something bad I try to act same to him as I wish people act to me if I do something bad.”

20. “I learned to never give up... you have to keep fighting and going forward in life...”

21. “What my mammy always told me: 'you cannot love too much'”

22. “The best is yet to come”
