Jennifer Garner has revealed that she enrolled her daughters in martial arts classes so they would learn self-defence from a young age.

The actress, who played an action hero in the TV series Alias, revealed that while she loves seeing nine-year-old Violet and five-year-old Seraphine bringing out their ‘feminine’ side by playing with dolls, it was important that they learn how to protect themselves.

The 42-year-old said: “[I want them] to be able to kick a guy’s ass. That’s why they’ve been taking karate since they were little.”

Speaking at the Save the Children Illumination Gala in Hollywood this week, Jennifer’s husband Ben Affleck praised her for the strong example she has set for their daughters.

“I think they understand what my wife understands full well, which is that it’s important to be strong and present and powerful and accept nothing less than a man would, and in fact, ask for more,” said the actor.

The couple are also parents to their son, two-year-old Samuel.
