Are there any helpful tips for taking care of grandparent's eyesight?

There are lots of things you can do to ensure that your eyes are in optimum condition as you get older including:
  • Find out if you are at higher risk for eye diseases: Be aware of your family’s health history. Do you or any of your family suffer from diabetes or have a history of high blood pressure? Are you over 65? If you have answered yes to any of these questions then you are at a higher risk of developing a potentially sight threatening eye disease. Regular eye exams are vital as early detection will reduce vision loss and prevent blindness
  • Visit your G.P. often for a physical exam to check for diabetes and high blood pressure. If left untreated, these diseases can cause eye problems. Diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and ocular hypertension.
  • Look for any warning signs of changes in your vision. If you start noticing any changes or feel your sight is deteriorating, you should see your doctor immediately. Some indications to watch out for include double vision, blurred vision, and difficulty seeing in low light. Other signs are frequent flashes of light, floaters, and eye pain and swelling. All of these symptoms can be caused by a serious eye condition so you should contact your G.P. or ophthalmologist immediately.
  • Get frequent exercise. Regular exercise, like walking can decrease the risk of developing age related macular degeneration.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Studies show that antioxidants can reduce the risk of cataracts. Antioxidants are found in fruits and dark green leafy vegetables. Eating fish rich in omega 3 may reduce the developing macular degeneration.
  • Get your eyes checked regularly. It is important to get your eyes tested regularly, at least once a year when you are over 60. A comprehensive eye exam can detect any signs of diabetic retinopathy. An eye exam will also ensure that your prescription for glasses or contact lenses is up to date.
  • Don’t smoke. Smokers are at a higher risk of developing age related macular degeneration and cataracts.
  • Be sure to wear protective eye gear. Sunglasses should be worn for any outdoor activities, wear safety glasses when working with tools or playing sports.
