Children are simply amazing. Despite their tender years they have a wonderful capacity for understanding right and wrong, and a way of showing compassion that never ceases to astound us.

So when we heard the story of a nine-year old girl who used her birthday money to buy lunch for police officers at Detroit’s 11th Precinct, we just had to share.

Samya McLaughlin used her birthday loot to buy sandwiches, crisps, fruit and a cookie for each of the officers. Why? Because amidst the anger and violence she wanted to show that “all lives matter’.

“I was thinking that I should feed the police officers because I wanted to show them that I support them and I thank them for all that they do,” the big-hearted girl told CBS Detroit’s WWJNewsradio 950.

Samya made the big-hearted decision after watching the coverage of the Dallas shooting, which culminated in the death of five police officers.

“We discuss things that’s going on,” her mum told WWJNewsradio 950. “I always ask her how she feels about it.”

“It makes you feel proud,” Samya’s dad added. “She has a big heart and she knows how to care, and she knows how to appreciate what’s going on.”

What a fantastic gesture from this socially-aware little girl. Exposing our children to difficult issues can be tricky, but if they’re are old enough to understand, it’s a great opportunity for us to teach them about the importance of compassion and love.

We’re sure Samya’s special lunches made these officers’ day.

SHARE if you think this was a wonderful gesture!
