A new study by the British Heart Foundation has found supermarket portion sizes have doubled in the last two decades.
While some products such as cheddar cheese have remained the same. a significant number of products have increased.
An average chicken curry and rice ready meal is now 53% larger than in 1993, while a frozen meat lasagne has increased by 39%.
A study of baked goods found that sliced bread still provided a portion of 36g, but crumpets are now 20-30% bigger and a bagel has increased in size by 24%.
While single portion bags of crisps have remained consistent, family bags were found to have increased by 50%.
The research also found that consumers had a poor understanding of portion sizes when serving themselves at home, with the average person pouring nearly 50% more cornflakes than the recommended portion.
What do you think? Have you noticed a change in portion sizes? Is an awareness campaign needed?
