The cost of Christmas dinner will increase this year with a 17% rise in the price of the tradition turkey.

The latest figures show mums will spend an extra £3 on a frozen turkey this year, as the average cost rises to about £20.

Those who buy at the butchers’ counter will be paying at least £60 for a typical turkey of the same size.

Figures show the price of turkey has risen by 8% in the past year, while the British Turkey Federation claims an increase of 6%.

Mums will find a bird weighing 5.3-6.9kg in Tesco for £20 and £22 in Sainsbury with Asda currently charging £20 for a 5.8kg bird.

Paul Kelly, chairman of the British Turkey Federation, said: ‘Massive fluctuations in the price of feed affects the price of a turkey but people will still 'trade up' at Christmas by getting the best they can afford. This year you'll be paying around £53 for a 4kg turkey.’

Other Christmas essentials like potatoes, carrots and sprouts, will be more expensive this year.

Mums worried about an expensive Christmas this year should start stocking up on non-perishables now in order to spread the cost.
