Here's why Victoria Beckham's recent comment did not warrant that backlash

Remember the last time you made a tongue-in-cheek remark about your children and found yourself berated by thousands of angry parents chastising you for not recognising your good fortune?

Yeah, me neither.

That, however, is exactly what happened to Victoria Beckham earlier this week when she made an off-the-cuff remark about her daughter Harper’s apparent disinterest in fashion.

During a light-hearted interview with Good Morning America, focus turned, as it often does, to the fashion designer’s four beautiful children.

Smiliing while chatting about her little girl’s passion for football , Victoria joked that Harper's supposed plans to follow in her father’s footsteps rather than her mother’s was like ‘dagger to the heart’.

The interviewer laughed. I laughed. And I’m sure thousands of other people who saw the footage laughed for the simple fact the woman was making a joke.

Victoria was joking.

Her four-year-old’s disinterest in fashion probably weighs as heavily on her mind as my daughter’s disinterest in plumbing does on mine, but for the sake of the interview which was born of Victoria’s new fashion collection, the working mum made a joke which tied together career and family.

So, sue her.

When a woman, who is accused of taking herself too seriously, mocked for her trademark pout and scorned for her reserved nature, attempts a lighthearted gag, shouldn’t we all unclench and see it for what it is?

Yes, there are of course far, far worse things happening in this world than a little girl mentioning she may not follow in mum’s footsteps.

I know this, you know this and, most importantly, Victoria knows this.

Having been honoured with the ‘philanthropreneur award’ for her work with the United Nation Aids Foundation and been credited with supporting numerous charities which strive to help both mothers and children, Victoria may be better equipped than most to comment on how much worse things can be in this world.

A brief interview with a light-hearted morning show wasn’t the time or the place to do that however, so instead she made a good-natured joke.

Get over it.
