As kids grow up, they’ll want to assert their personalities in everything they do, and their bedrooms are no exception. Whether it be a One Direction or Hunger Games obsession, your kids will want to reflect that in their notebooks, online and on their walls. In order to makeover an entire room can be costly, especially if you go all out, and the trouble with a change of this scale is that your child may get over their ‘obsession’ in a couple of months…or weeks. Here are some ideas to help them express themselves in their own rooms, without it costing an arm and a leg.

· A Lick of Paint- A new lease of life can be added to your child’s bedroom with a new coat of paint. It can completely transform the space, and for a reasonable price too. The great thing about paint as well is that you can just paint over it as it ages with wear and as your child’s personality and interest develop. It would be best to stick to neutral colours which can be more relevant as your child grows, but at the end of the day paint is cheap and repainting isn’t too much of a hassle. A painting day could double as an activity for you and your child to do together when the time comes around.

· A Feature Wall- If you’re not up to painting the entire bedroom, why not choose a single wall in the bedroom to jazz up and make a central feature? This will add something unique to the space, and it’s an opportunity for your child to get their creative juices flowing and create something in a particular space of their room, which they can be proud of. This feature wall could consist of wallpaper, a particular block of colour, or wall stickers.

· Posters- Posters are a cost effective way to let your child channel their latest interests without having a permanent feature in your house. Posters can be easily moved and can really add an injection of personality to a room.

· Frames- Frames are a great interior investment. If you purchase a good set they could last your kids years, and can keep up with the times too. Changing photos within the frames is stress-free and really look great in a bedroom. Framing photos of your children with their friends or family adds a great unique touch- you can even frame certificates and their own drawing or paintings. These little details will add an individual stamp on their bedroom.

· Hit charity shops and car boot sales- In terms of adding more permanent additions to your child’s bedroom on a budget- why not take a couple of visits to some charity shops or car boot sales. If you’re really thrifty, you may be able to find some newly owned rugs, tables, cushions, etc., for half the price you would have if you had bought them brand new.

Don’t forget to involve your child in the process of decorating their room. This will help them claim authority over their own space, and encourage them to spend more time in it. Decorating a bedroom is creative opportunity for children, and may even lead to a certain sense of ‘house pride’. This may even encourage them to clean up once in a while! Which is always a bonus.
