So it turns out my family aren't that 'normal' after all. Who knew?!

Every family has their little traditions, don't they?

Whether they're daily, weekly or yearly rituals, these things tend to be unique to each family.

The funny thing about family traditions is that while they may not seem weird to you, your partner or your children, you can be damn sure they seem utterly bizarre to anyone on the outside looking in.

Whether they are traditions which have been passed down through the generations or ones simply born of you child's inability to correctly pronounce the word 'supermarket', these family foibles are what makes your family yours.

Well, as it turns out, it's also what makes your family inherently weird.

Grace hosted her first ever 'grown-up girl slumber party' last week and it appears that spending time in our house was the equivalent of taking a trip to Mars for one of her school friends.

“Why did you always blow in Joshua's hat before you put it on him? “ she asked.

“I don't know, honey.” I replied. “I think it made him smile as a baby and I never stopped.”

“Weeeeeird!”

“Why did Grace's dad wear a Chef's hat at breakfast this morning?” she asked.

“Because it's Saturday!” Joshua responded, astounded anyone would question his pop's logic on that one.

“Weeeeird!”

“Why do you and Grace always do those funny things with your hands?” she asked.

“Oh, it's sign language,” I faltered. “It means 'I love you'. We learned it together one day.”

“Weeeeird!”

And on it went.

On and on and on.

While the four of us were on our best behaviour lest we fall victim to playground gossips on Monday, it seems our family rituals betrayed us and revealed us for what we really are.

Lunatics who get a kick out of quirky headwear, toss a coin to see who gets the first Saturday morning pancake and exchange pleasantries without exchanging words.

I had no idea.
