Nine months, three quarters of a year, as long 'out' as 'in'... Whichever way you look at it, our gorgeous son is another month older and his first birthday seems scarily close all of a sudden! It's been a very busy development month for Toby and he's rapidly growing out of being a baby and becoming a little boy.

Feeding

I've felt so much more confident since we saw the dietician last month and so far all is going really well with Toby having more food. He's not got a huge appetite, but that's okay and the main thing is that he tries all different foods and enjoys tasting, touching and exploring his food. His absolute favourites are carrot and sweet potato, but he's also seemed to enjoy swede, cod, salmon, all sorts of fruit, soya yoghurt and creamy dishes made with soya cream. We're introducing different possible allergens slowly so that we can easily identify if something upsets him, but his tummy has been absolutely fine so we're thrilled. Around Toby's first birthday we would like to slowly try some dairy products, but for now he's doing well on oat and soya alternatives.

Sleeping

Toby is very hot-or-miss still with his sleeping, he can go a week sleeping through then be up anything between one and four times on other nights. We try to take each night as it comes but obviously the sleepless ones are tough! I'd say more often than not he wakes up once but settles easily enough. Naps are still fairly regular, he has between 30-60 minutes in the morning then another half an hour in the afternoon. On Easter Sunday he miraculously slept for 1 1/2 hours in the morning after only being up once in the night too, then had another 40 minutes after lunch, I couldn't believe it!

Development

A couple of weeks ago, out of nowhere, Toby started pushing himself up on to his hands and knees although he's not mastered actual crawling yet. He can easily push himself backwards and in circles, so he is happy to spend quite a long time on his tummy now because in a fashion he can get around. We're also hearing a lot more sounds as Toby practices his speech. There was one day in Nottingham after a play date with our lovely friends Zena and Little Pudding from Zena's Suitcase when Toby spent a good few hours waving and saying "Buh-buh" to absolutely everyone! He does like waving although in recent days this has been replaced with clapping, which is fab! I'm trying to teach him how to blow kisses - he's not a cuddly baby so I want some semblance or love from him!

Health

STILL NO TEETH!! It feels like we've had the dribble, the chomping, the ear pulling, the colds and everything else for months yet there's not even a hint of a tooth cutting. Has anyone else had a really late teether? Many of his friends have at least two or four now. His weight is still really good, he's sitting on the scales at 8.5kg/18lb 12oz.

You may have seen on Twitter and Instagram that Toby's eczema has been flaring up pretty badly and it's been awful seeing him covered in sore red patches which I have to try and stop him from scratching. The very lovely people at Aveeno sent us a few of their products to try and Barefoot SOS also very kindly sent us their Face and Body Rescue Cream. I'm trying the Aveeno products first because we've got the bath oil, lotion and cream so it's consistent for Toby's entire skincare routine but I did have a little test of the Barefoot SOS and loved it so I'll let you know how we get on.

Toby's got a really nasty cold at the moment and has been very unsettled, so we've had a lot of screaming (our son doesn't do crying, he screams!) amongst the snot and coughing. Poor little thing sounds really rough overnight, coughing violently which is horrible.

Mummy News

I've signed up for my first 10km race, raising money for the Alzheimer's Society. I'm nervous but excited and just hoping I get some sponsors! I've also been some paid work thanks to a good friend, which is very much appreciated. I mentioned last month that I had been feeling a bit up and down so on the back of that I decided to start a weekly blog series about emotional wellbeing as parents and I currently have guest bloggers scheduled until August. My intro post featuring my own story is here and if you would like to get involved then please get in touch. My Nan was in hospital a couple of weeks ago which was very difficult because she has advanced Alzheimer's so we didn't know what to expect but she's perked up again so we're very grateful. On a blogging note, Mum and I had an amazing time at Cheltenham Ladies Day, my 'Am I Not a Real Mum?' post was featured on the front page of Parentdish and if you're a Huffington Post reader you may soon see a familiar face on there too!

I'm feeling much better generally, I do have some wobbly times but they last hours rather than days and I still always feel happy as my overriding emotion. I mean look at my gorgeous hubby and son, how could I not be happy?!
