If your child is still young enough to require a car seat, you may want to make yourself aware of the latest regulation change.

The new rules mean manufacturers are no longer able to introduce backless booster seats for any children shorter than 125cm, or weighing less than 22kg.

The new rules came into effect on February 9, after the Department for Transport received a notice from the United Nations.

While it’s important to be aware of these changes, parents are being told not to worry about booster seats and cushions they may already own, as they will not be affected by the new regulations.

“The change doesn’t affect existing models of seats or cushions, and doesn’t mean that they are unsafe or illegal,” the Department for Transport says.

“Parents are still being encouraged to make sure they know the rules for using child car seats.

“The change to the technical standards means that the range of products available on the market are better suited for younger children.”

Children as light as 15kg were previously allowed to travel in backless booster seats, however experts now say regulations need to be stricter.
